New years fireworks

Focus on Changing Ourselves First

Unlike people who make bold predictions about what the new year will bring, the only thing I feel confident about is that I don’t know what will happen and much of what does happen will be outside of my control.

With that in mind, I’m thinking about how to be a better human being in in the coming year because that I do control. I’m kicking around five ideas. Maybe one will resonate with you, and we can work on it together.

🔬 1. Triple-check the facts

There’s a lot of misinformation, some passed along intentionally and some because nobody thought to confirm it. I only want to share information that’s true. This will require some work.

❄️ 2. Treat people as unique

It’s so easy to put others into a category and then act as if I know everything about them. I don’t like it when people put a label on me, so I will fight the urge to put one on them. My goal is to start without preconceptions and get to know them for who they are.

👫 3. Prioritize relationships over being right

I don’t need to win every conflict I find myself in. Often the relationship is more important than the argument’s outcome.

💁‍♂️ 4. See who needs help

Every day, if I’m paying attention, there will likely be someone who could use a helping hand or simply a kind word. Offer one generously.

🐢 5. Slow down

Non-stop hurry doesn’t make us more productive, and it gets in the way of being a better human. Dial back on the number of commitments I make and the speed at which I try to fulfill them.

What are you thinking about working on in the coming year? We can all benefit from hearing more ideas.
